The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has arrested former Ghanaian Minister of Sanitation, Ms. Cecilia Dapaah on suspicion of corruption.
The arrest comes after two of Dapaah’s domestic staff were accused of stealing $1 million in cash, €300,000, and several million Ghana cedis from her home.
Ms Dapaah said, “I can state emphatically that those figures do not represent correctly what my husband and I reported to the police, I am very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position” thereby denying the allegations meted on her.
She has also said that she intends to cooperate fully with the OSP to establish the facts of the case.
The agency reported that the ex-minister was put under house arrest on Sunday, July 22, on suspicion of corruption and related offenses.
A considerable number of Ghanaians and anti-corruption activists have raised doubts about how a public servant could have an enormous amount of money concealed in their home during a period of economic hardship in Ghana.
Her resignation was accepted by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo on Saturday in response to public outcry.
The OSP has said that it will continue to investigate the case and that anyone found to be involved in corruption will be brought to justice.
