The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will launch its campaign for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections next month, John Dramani Mahama, the party’s flag bearer has announced.
Following the August campaign launch, party members will be mobilized nationwide to gather support.
Mahama shared this during a working visit to the Ayawaso West Wuogon and Adentan constituencies in Greater Accra, where he engaged with various stakeholders, including chiefs, clergy, students, market women, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.
At a mini-rally at the Elizabeth Sey Hostel in Legon, Mahama emphasized his re-election bid’s goal to implement policies benefiting all citizens, not just a selected few. He urged students to trust him and the NDC parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, to bring about positive change.
While acknowledging the university’s population increase without additional infrastructure Mahama pledged to collaborate with the private sector to build more hostels, addressing the accommodation crisis on campus.
Also, in Adentan, Mahama met with traditional rulers and clergy, describing the current economic situation as the worst in the nation’s history. He criticized the government’s performance, noting that Ghana, which was the second-largest economy in the subregion during his tenure, has now been surpassed by Cote d’Ivoire.
“Everyone in this country witnesses the economic difficulties. Since I was born in Ghana, things have not been this tough. All grown-ups will agree that we have never seen this level of hardship,” he said.
He also pointed out the all-time high fuel prices, which have reached about GH¢16 per litre, contributing to food insecurity.
“If voters return the NPP to power despite the corruption, state land capture, and poor economic performance, it will be seen as a reward for bad governance,” he said.
Mahama therefore promised to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate corruption and state land capture if elected, also pledging to improve Adentan’s roads and expanding the water supply, which he claimed had stagnated under the current government.
