The U.S. Department of State’s Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices has cited Ghana for having life-threatening prison system.
The latest report released in April 2022 goes hard on corruption as well as human rights violations in the West African country.
In this US report, Ghana’s prisons have been tagged as not only having harsh conditions but life-threatening ones due to overcrowding, inadequate sanitary conditions, lack of medical care, physical abuse, and food shortages.
“While prisoners had access to potable water, food was inadequate. Meals routinely lacked fruit, vegetables, or meat, forcing prisoners to rely on charitable donations and their families to supplement their diet.
“Officials held much of the prison population in old buildings or abandoned public or military buildings, which despite improvements had poor ventilation and sanitation, substandard construction, and inadequate space and light,” parts of the US Reports says as it exposed the poor conditions in Ghana’s prisons.
