Ghana’s National Security operatives have carried out a significant bust, seizing a large but unspecified amount of counterfeit US dollars and Ghana Cedis hidden in 12 separate 20-foot shipping containers.
According to security officials, the containers were traced to a warehouse in Ofakor, located in the Ga South Municipality. Acting on a tip-off, a special late-night operation was conducted, leading to the discovery of the concealed currency.
A report by Daily Graphic on Monday revealed that the fake money, primarily bundles of US dollars, was hidden inside wooden boxes covered with cement. Further searches uncovered additional counterfeit notes sealed in plywood boxes and covered with charcoal.
Authorities also disclosed that two more containers linked to the operation are currently being tracked.
The report further indicated that members of the crime syndicate behind the operation are on the run. A manhunt has been launched for four key suspects, including the alleged ringleader, identified only as Alhaji.
In addition to the fake currency, security operatives retrieved other suspicious items from the warehouse, including boxes of metals believed to be gold bars, counterfeit Ghana Cedi notes, and fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots.
