Ghana will begin issuing chip-embedded biometric passports starting Monday, April 28, 2025, according to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Heritage Times HT reports that the new passports aim to improve security, reduce the role of middlemen in the application process, and enhance transparency. The embedded microchips will securely store biometric information, offering better protection against identity theft and fraud.
This rollout is part of a broader reform agenda by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Additional measures include 24-hour passport services, courier delivery, e-tracking, and a 30% reduction in application fees.
Minister Ablakwa emphasized the government’s commitment to digitization and improving public services, calling the initiative a major step toward modernizing the country’s passport system.
