Ghanaian media personality Afua Asantewaa has completed a five-day singing marathon, aspiring to secure a coveted spot in the Guinness World Records.
Wrapped in her nation’s flag and battling a hoarse voice, the 33-year-old expressed gratitude to the crowd of supporters gathered in the capital, Accra, as she struggled to recall the current day.
Asantewaa who embarked on her musical journey on Christmas Eve, surpassed a previous sing-a-thon record by almost 24 hours, pending official recognition from Guinness World Records.
Organizers reported that Asantewaa performed for an impressive 126 hours and 52 minutes, adhering to the rules that permitted a five-minute break every hour or a cumulative 20 minutes after four hours.
Despite her exhaustion, the entrepreneur and former beauty queen, speaking with a raspy voice, hoped her marathon would serve as an inspiration, particularly to women, encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones and explore new opportunities, emphasizing that with determination, any goal is achievable.
The continuous serenade drew significant support, particularly on Christmas Day, with notable figures such as music stars Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, and Sarkodie, along with Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, actors, actresses, and influencers joining the audience.
Asantewaa skillfully cycled through 125 songs representing Ghanaian music history across genres like gospel, high-life, and hip-life, all part of a broader effort to showcase and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of her country.
Accompanied by a DJ providing the backing track, Asantewaa could only briefly pause within or between songs, maintaining focus even as the enthusiastic crowds joined in.
The entire record attempt was meticulously documented, featuring a film crew and named witnesses responsible for submitting a comprehensive report to Guinness World Records.
This year, neighbouring Nigeria experienced a record-breaking trend, ignited by chef Hilda Baci’s marathon cooking session lasting over 90 hours.
