Ohio University has suspended a scholarship awarded to a Ghanaian student who was found to have engaged in hateful attacks against LGBT Ghanaians on Twitter.
The scholarship was meant to support LGBTQIA+ community members, applicants from the Global South, first-generation students, and people with disabilities.
The student, Sakyi, was pursuing a PhD program in Biological Science at Ohio University in the United States when the attacks occurred. The attacks were brought to light by Papa Kojo, an LGBT activist, who received a threat from Sakyi.

The university has taken swift action in response to the attacks, suspending Sakyi’s scholarship pending a review. The university has emphasized that it is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
“This incident highlights the importance of promoting tolerance, respect, and understanding. Hateful attacks against any group of people are unacceptable and have no place in our society. We must all work together to create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” the University said.
