Golf great Rory McIlroy stormed out of the 2024 US Open in a final that would have seen him returning to winning ways.
Instead, Mcllroy felt humiliated across the closing holes of the tournament which saw another major title slip off his grasp.
With the tournament at his mercy and leading by two shots with five holes to play, McIlroy collapsed at the finish with bogeys on three of his final four holes, including a heart-breaker at the 18th.
The Golf expert, a Northern Irishman amazingly missed from two feet and six inches for par on the 16th and less than four feet on the 18th to suffer another scarcely believable end in his 10-year pursuit for a fifth Major.
McIlroy’s next shot at winning his first major title since the PGA Championship in August 2014 will be at the British Open on July 18 to 21, 2024.
The 2024 US Open marked the fourth runner-up finish in a major for the Northern Irishman including at last year’s U.S. Open, but none came in a more crushing fashion.
How The Play Panned Out
McIlroy began the day three shots back of 54-hole leader DeChambeau, but bolstered by a sizzling stretch around the turn where he had four birdies across five holes, had a two-shot lead with five holes to play, as reported by ESPN.
The wheels started to come off when McIlroy bogeyed the par-three 15th where he failed to get up and down after his tee shot rolled off the back of the green.
He then made a second consecutive bogey when, for the first time all season, he missed a par putt from inside three feet.
McIlroy left the door open for DeChambeau when he missed the fairway at hole 18, advanced it just off the front of the green with his next shot, chipped it just past the hole and then watched his par putt from inside four feet lip out.
