According to a corporate representative, Google, a division of Alphabet Inc., has authorized former US President Donald Trump’s social media program Truth Social for sale in the Google Play Store.
Google announced on Wednesday that Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which runs Truth Social, will soon make the app accessible through the Play Store.
A request for a response from TMTG was not immediately complied with.
According to a Google representative in August, the Play Store has not previously offered Truth Social because of insufficient content control.
Truth Social made its US debut in the Apple App Store in February. Infractions of Google’s Play Store guidelines, which forbid material like physical threats and calls to violence, have raised issues with Truth Social.
Most smartphone users wouldn’t have a simple method to download Truth Social without Google and Apple shops.
The primary resource for Android app downloads in the US is Google’s Play Store. Android users can download programs straight from websites or through competing app stores, albeit the latter frequently necessitates additional procedures and security approvals. Even after Google barred Truth Social from the Play Store, it was still accessible through those channels.
About 40% of smartphones sold in the US are Android-powered.
After being suspended from Twitter Inc, Facebook Inc, and Alphabet Inc’s YouTube following January 6, 2021, US Capitol riots based on allegations that he had posted messages encouraging violence, Truth Social reinstated Trump’s social media profile more than a year later.
TMTG has promised to provide an “engaging and censorship-free experience” on Truth Social, appealing to a base who feels that their opinions on contentious issues like the results of the 2020 presidential election have been erased from popular internet platforms.
