Alistair Mokoena, the South Africa head of Google navigation apps, Waze and Google Maps, revealed that these apps will no longer guide users through Cape Town’s Nyanga township and nearby areas.d
The decision comes in response to heightened security concerns stemming from recent incidents.
Just last week, a US tourist fell victim to a robbery and was shot in the face after following the navigation app’s route through Nyanga. The app had directed him through the township as the quickest path from Cape Town International Airport to the city. Tragically, this incident is not an isolated case.
In September, a British surgeon named Kar Hao Teoh, aged 40, was fatally shot during a protest by taxi operators in Nyanga. Local media reports indicate that other individuals, primarily tourists, have also been attacked or killed while driving through Nyanga, often after following the guidance of navigation apps.
Following the unfortunate incident involving Mr. Teoh, the UK government has issued a warning to its citizens traveling to South Africa. They urge caution when relying solely on GPS navigation and advise against taking alternative routes that may lead to less secure areas, especially those in townships on the outskirts of major cities or isolated regions.
The advisory emphasizes that the majority of violent crimes tend to occur in these townships or isolated areas. It serves as a reminder to prioritize personal safety and avoid straying from main roads when traveling in unfamiliar territories.
As a result of these security concerns, Google navigation apps have made the decision to exclude Nyanga township and nearby areas from their recommended routes. This measure aims to mitigate the risk of users inadvertently entering potentially dangerous situations.
While the intention of navigation apps is to provide efficient and convenient routes, it is crucial for users to exercise caution and remain aware of their surroundings, especially in areas with higher security risks. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of personal safety and the need to make informed decisions when using navigation apps.
