The 82-year-old incumbent president of Guinea, Alpha Conde, has pulled 59.5% of votes at the recently concluded presidential election to secure a third term in office.
This was contained in Preliminary results of the polls which also reveal that his opponent, Cellou Dalein Diallo gathered 33.5% votes.
Although Conde’s victory is subject to confirmation by the constitutional court, opposition leader Diallo has vowed to contest the result, alleging large scale fraud
“We are still going to refer the matter to the constitutional court, without having too many expectations.” Mr Diallo told Agence France-Presse.
Meanwhile, there are fears of further clashes if the results are disputed.
Dozens of people are reported to have been killed in the month after the president made a public decision to re-run.
According to the Guinean media report, at least 30 people have died since the polls began last Sunday including three police officers who were caught up in gunfire at the country’s capital, Conakry, on Friday.
Communications by telephone are barely going through and the internet has been shut down at the time of this report.
Residents in opposition strongholds have also reported that most of them are held up in their homes, adding that the police are using live ammunition against protesters instead of tear gas.
President Alpha Conde maintains that a constitutional referendum in March allowed him to run despite a two-term limit.
However, his opponents say he is breaking the law by holding on to power.
