Controversy over early election results in Guinea has sparked protest with main opposition leader Cellou Dalien Diallo claiming three of his supporters have been killed and several others injured.
Shortly after Sunday’s presidential elections, before official announcement by the electoral body, Diallo declared himself winner.
Diallo had told journalists and his supporters that he won the first round despite “anomalies,” the BBC is reporting.
Responding, the electoral commission said vote counting is still ongoing and that it is the only body mandated to announce the winner.
Diallo’s supporters who took to the streets to celebrate were dispersed by police.
He reportedly tweeted that three people had been killed and several others injured by the police.
The Heritage Times gathered that Diallo got 58.77% of the votes, Alpha Conde: 38.40% while others: 2.83%
President Alpha Conde is said to be under pressure from Diplomats to admit defeat and prevent bloodshed.
However, Conde is trying to negotiate a second round with diplomats to avoid the humiliation of the 1st round.
Recall that Guineans had protested for months following the decision by Condé to run for a third term. Opposition had ask him to step aside for he his too old to pilot the affairs of the country.
Results of the tensed election are expected by Wednesday after which candidates have eight days to appeal.
Presidential candidates need more than 50% of the vote for an outright victory, or there will be a second round on 24 November
