Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that having Odion Ighalo back into the national team would be good for the likes of Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho.
The former Manchester United forward retired from national duties after the 2019 AFCON where the Nigeria won the Bronze medal following a 1-0 victory over Tunisia.
Ighalo won the golden boot in the competition and was included in the team of the tournament.
While there were reports of Ighalo’s return to the Super Eagles during the just concluded AFCON qualifiers, Rohr stuck with the quality of Osimhen and Iheanacho to finish off the campaign, with the former emerging as joint-top scorer.
However, during an interview with Elegbete TV, the German tactician noted that Ighalo’s experience would be helpful to his team as a result of his goal-scoring ability.
“The answer is simple. The answer is when you look at the age of all the players that you speak about, they are all young, and also we need experience.
“And if, for example, Odion Ighalo will play with us- I don’t know if it’s possible for the moment, but perhaps if he’s coming back, I think players like Osimhenn and even Kelechi Iheanacho could have a big help in the presence of Ighalo to learn, to progress to see his professionalism.
“He’s a great professional, a big example for everybody, and he’s also a great goalscorer. We are very young, especially in the attack, and it could be good to have some more experience with us, Rohr added.
