Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has been handed a stern warning by new interim Super Eagles Manager Austin Eguavoen ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is due to take place next month.
Ndidi has in recent years established himself as a key player for the Nigerian national team, but the new interim boss, who is in charge for AFCON, believes the 25-year-old can do more.
That is despite him tipping Ndidi to become one of the “best defensive players in the world”.
Since joining the Foxes in 2017, Ndidi has been pivotal in Leicester’s chase of a silverware and has been heavily linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Eguavoen has reminded Ndidi of his potential in a public interview and admitted he has spoken to the 25-year-old about his concerns.
“When I see Ndidi in the midfield, not 100% Oliseh [Sunday, legendary African midfielder], but I think he is on his way to becoming one of the best defensive players in the world,” Eguavoen told ATHLST.
“But he’s holding back as far as I am concerned. He’s got a lot to still give, but I think he is holding back.
“I have spoken to him on one or two occasions.”
Meanwhile, Ndidi could line up at centre-half for Leicester in a League Cup clash away to Liverpool on Wednesday.
