Sergio Aguero might soon turn out for a different club next season as Manchester City confirmed yesterday that the Argentine will not be offered a new contract.
The Argentine leaves City as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, and indeed one of the finest strikers to ever play in the English Premier League.
Aguero is reportedly grabbing the attention of several European clubs, with Chelsea and Barcelona leading the chase for his signature.
However, it’s more like a case of dead on arrival for Chelsea; if a deal is eventually struck with the 32-year-old, who had once dreamed a move to Stamford Bridge in 2013. But such never occurred.
Infuriatingly for Chelsea fans, the Argentina international could have turned out the West London side Chelsea legend and former captain John Terry reportedly pulled the plug for a deal to be reached.
According to an article in The Athletic back in 2019, Terry was not entirely convinced by Aguero as he was eyed up by Chelsea during his Atletico Madrid days.
Terry, who is now the assistant head coach at Aston Villa, wanted Chelsea to cool their interest in Aguero and make a move for David Villa.
However, neither move happened in the end, and it wasn’t that long afterwards that they signed big-money flop Fernando Torres up front.
Aguero has since become City’s all-time record scorer and the sixth-highest scorer in the Premier League’s history.
The City star has captured four Premier League titles, four League Cups and an FA Cup since his move to Manchester.
