The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it has been contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to arrest DCP Abba Kyari, over his connection with a serial internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi.
Disclosing this to SaharaReporters on Thirsdi, a top source in the EFCC said no arrest can be made by the anti-graft agency, stressing that Kyari is a police officer and that the case was not within the capacity of the EFCC but for the police to handle.
“FBI has contacted EFCC, asking that we arrest Abba Kyari but we told them that it is a police matter” the source in the EFCC said.
Heritage Times had earlier reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI obtained a warrant of arrest from Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California to track down Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in a multi-million dollar fraud.
Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai last June and he pleaded guilty to fraud in the US this week.
According to the FBI, Abbas and Kyari have been friends and were both involved in a conspiracy to launder money.
American prosecutors first sought a court warrant to arrest Kyari on February 12, 2021, according to court documents seen by newsmen.
Thereafter, another warrant was requested on April 29, 2021. It wasn’t until July 26 that Judge Wright’s permission for the FBI to arrest Mr Kyari and hold him in US custody was unsealed.
