Victor Osimhen has vowed to break the goal-record held by the late Rashidi Yekini following his goalscoring heroics in Nigeria’s biggest ever win on Monday.
The Arsenal target fired home four goals for Nigeria as the Super Eagles thrashed Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group A qualifier in Agadir, Morocco.
With his four goals against Sao Tome and Principe, Osimhen has 15 international goals in 22 appearances for Nigeria, but not within a touching distance to Yekini’s 37-goal haul – the best return for any Super Eagles striker.
Speaking after his side’s win, the 23-year-old said he won’t relent on his efforts scoring for the team.
“I believe we carried out 80 to 90 per cent of them and of course I am happy to score four goals and I am happy for my teammates that got their goals as well, their first goals like Ademola Lookman, Terem Moffi and Emmanuel Dennis.
“There is a big solidarity in the team and this is what the coach has taught us. I believe as a group we have the quality to build on this momentum. And yes, I want to score more goals for the team, and of course keep on getting the wins for the team.
“I believe as each game comes by we are going to get three points because it is important in the qualifiers as we don’t want to lose any game, and we are working towards it,” he stated.
The win means Nigeria have a full haul of six points from their opening two games as they seek to reach the continental finals in Ivory Coast next June.
