The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) says it has begun an investigation into illegal payments made into the accounts of some public officials.
The anti-graft agency has also assured that the final report of the investigations will be ready soon and made public.
The development comes after this news newspaper earlier in the week uncovered illegal payment of no fewer than N4.6 billion into the personal accounts of 21 staff members of the former ministry of power works and housing in the last third of 2019.
An official of the now standalone ministry of power, confirmed the illegal payments, noting that they were mostly for duty tour allowances.
The report drew outrage from Nigerians and Anti-Corruption advocates who are demanding for accountability, urging the government to press charges against erring officials caught in the scandal.
Nigeria’s major opposition party PDP also lent its voice to the calls for accountability, urging the Presidency to speak out on the findings in the report, as well as address the taints which it rubs on the administration’s anti-corruption mantra.
Although ICPC’s sister anti-graft agency promised to make its findings public, it gave no definite timeline as regard to the development.
