Kelechi Iheanacho continued from where he left off last season, as his late penalty clinched a 1-0 win for Leicester City over Premier League defending champions, Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday.
City fans went home disappointed after Nigerian frontman Iheanacho converted the winner against his old club 11 minutes after coming on.
Iheanacho’s compatriot Wilfred Ndidi was also in action for Leicester and saw 90 minutes of football.
English-born Nigerian left-winger, Samuel Edozie, was also handed his senior competitive debut for City.
Edozie was impressive in City’s pre-season, enough to get Guardiola’s nod again for a starting role in the Community Shield clash versus Leicester.
The 18-year-old has represented England at U-18 level, and is eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level if he so desires.
City’s record £100m signing Jack Grealish was given his debut on 65 minutes, but he could not muster a clear-cut opportunity for a much-changed team.
Pep Guardiola’s men wasted several clear cut chances as the game was eventually settled in regular time. Leicester were awarded a penalty when Nathan Ake tripped Iheanacho inside the area.
Iheanacho assumed the penalty-taking responsibilities with Vardy already subbed and slotted his strike into the top corner on 89 minutes despite Steffen getting a hand to the ball.
It was the first time in 50 years that the Leicester City won the trophy–traditionally the first title of every season.
