Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho eclipsed the record set by Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba for most goals scored by an African in the FA Cup as Leicester City reach the semi-final of the competition with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United.
Iheanacho, who has been in a blistering form following his hattrick against Sheffield United last weekend, leveled Drogba’s 12 goals in the competition after he intercepted a back pass from Fred to United keeper Dean Henderson before going round the goalkeeper to slot home from a close range.
The former Manchester City star soon increased his tally to 13 goals to leap frog the Ivorian record, when he struck again in the 78th minute to send the Foxes to the semis just after Youri Tielemans had put the host back in front.
Mason Greenwood grabbed what became a consolation goal for United before half-time as the Red Devils got knocked out of the competition.
It’s the first time since 1982 that Leicester City would play in the semi-final and they will face Southampton at Wembley in April.
The 24-year-old forward will hope to continue in his red-hot form for the Super Eagles when they trade tackles with Benin and Lesotho for the AFCON ticket to Cameroon 2022 next week.
