The collection of Service-Based Electricity Tariffs (SBT) will resume next week.
Confirming the development to newsmen the special adviser on infrastructure to President Buhari, Ahmad Zakari said the implementation will begin next week as the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have accepted the new terms.
The Heritage Times had earlier reported that the new electricity tariff was suspended to enable the ad hoc Technical Committee on Electricity Tariff review and work out modalities for the implementation of the agreement reached on the electricity tariffs structure.
Zakari who stressed that the electricity market in the country will collapse if the new tariff is not implemented, added that the Federal government’s intention is to transit to a market-based regime, where the demand and supply will determine prices.
He also stated that the implementation of the new tariff would enhance transparency as it enables the government to closely monitor the collection of electricity revenues by the Distribution Companies (Discos).
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has commenced the distribution of free electricity meters to Nigerians Nationwide.
The distribution commenced today at in Kano, Kaduna, Eko, and Ikeja DISCO franchise areas.
The exercise would be monitored by representatives of the Lagos government, members of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Representatives of the organised labour and civil society organisations would also be included in the monitoring process.
