The inaugural African Climate Summit, themed “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World,” is underway in Nairobi.
Spearheaded by Kenyan President William Ruto, the gathering has drawn 24 Heads of State and Government from Africa and beyond to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
The primary objective of this summit is to address the growing challenges posed by climate change, with a particular focus on Africa.
It serves as a platform to inform, shape, and influence commitments, pledges, and outcomes, ultimately culminating in the development of the Nairobi Declaration.
While there were some challenges during the accreditation process at the centres yesterday, today’s proceedings seem to be progressing smoothly.
The distinguished speakers for the opening session include President William Ruto of Kenya, President Azali Assoumani of Comoros, and Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In today’s program, a significant highlight is the opening session titled “The Power of the Potential.”
This session sets the stage for the African Climate Summit and African Climate Week, showcasing Africa’s capacity to tackle climate challenges.
It also underscores the need for a more equitable financial system and underscores Africa’s stance as it heads into the Conference of Parties 28, scheduled for the final week of November into early December.
President Ruto made a grand entrance at the Tsavo Auditorium, arriving at precisely 8:57 to much fanfare.
During the African Youth Climate Assembly held yesterday, young individuals from across African nations presented their declaration to President William Ruto.
Today, representatives from youth and indigenous groups will also present their declaration.
