Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun has now settled to represent the United States national team.

This is after he rejected England and Nigeria as options where he could pledge his international allegiance.

FIFA/US Confirmation

Already, FIFA on Tuesday confirmed that it has approved a request by the US Soccer Federation to change Balogun’s national eligibility.

FIFA rules allow players to change national eligibility before playing in a competitive game at senior level.

Also confirming the development, US Soccer said Balogun would be representing the country in a statement.

The country’s football body said he’s expected to join the team for the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League semifinals in June.

US Coach’s Delight

According to USMNT head coach Anthony Hudson, as captured by Mail Online, “We are delighted that Folarin has chosen to represent the United States.

“Not only is he an extremely talented player, he’s also a good man who is going to add value to our National Team both on and off the field at a time when the team is continuing to improve. It’s clear that he values his U.S. roots and we can’t wait for him to come in and be a part of the team.”

Balogun Bears His Minds

Reacting to the development, Balogun said, “My decision to represent the United States came together with my family.

“In the end it became a no-brainer, but for sure it’s just something I wanted to do and it feels like I’m at home here.

“To represent the United States means a lot, more than people would know. I’m very proud and honored to have this opportunity, and I want to give everything I have to make our team successful.”

A Decison/Transition Waiting To Happen

Balogun’s decision to represent the United States comes five weeks before England plays in the Under-21 European Championship being hosted by Romania and Georgia.

The US courted Balogun on a visit to Florida in March, 2023.

Balogun, who was born at Brooklyn by his Nigerian parents, represented the United States at the U-18 level, but played for England youth teams at U-17, U-18, U-20, and U-21 levels.

As of late, the striker has made 13 appearances for the England U-21s and bagged seven goals.

Balogun In France

Balogun has been in demand after a breakout season in France on loan to Reims from Arsenal.

He has 19 goals and is dueled with Kylian Mbappe for part of the season to be the league top scorer. Mbappe now leads with 26 for Paris Saint-Germain.
