In commemorating this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Sightsavers has reiterated its commitment to fostering an inclusive society where everyone can thrive and contribute to sustainable development.
With the theme, “Sustainable Development: Advancing the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, Sightsavers noted that Persons with disabilities remain among the most marginalized groups globally, often facing barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and participation in public life.
This year’s theme underscores the urgent need for disability-inclusive policies and practices to ensure no one is left behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Sightsavers Nigeria Country Director, Dr. Joy Shu’aibu, speaking on the critical role of inclusion in sustainable development, stated that sustainable development is impossible without inclusion.
‘‘We must remove the physical, societal and systemic barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from reaching their full potential. At Sightsavers, we are committed to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities through empowerment, partnerships, and community-driven initiatives.” She said.
She added that at this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Sightsavers reaffirms its commitment to breaking down barriers and building a more inclusive world also for women and girls with disabilities.
The statement further revealed Sightsavers’ projects in Nigeria, including the transformative SABI-Woman project, which has empowered hundreds of women, girls, and youth with disabilities, equipping them with the tools and confidence to overcome societal challenges and achieve their dreams.
One remarkable success story is that of Hajara, an 18-year-old visually impaired student from Kano. Despite losing her sight at age two, Hajara has emerged as a beacon of hope in her community. With support from the SABI-Woman programme, she ventured into online sales, becoming financially independent and inspiring others.
Meanwhile, Sightsavers is hosting a series of activities across Nigeria, including community forums, media engagements, and school awareness campaigns. These events aim to raise awareness about disability rights and champion the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society.
This year’s theme emphasizes the vital role of inclusion in sustainable development, calling on governments, organizations and communities to invest in initiatives that empower persons with disabilities.
Sightsavers is an international organization partnering with governments and stakeholders in more than 30 low- and middle-income countries across Africa and Asia. Together, they strive to eliminate avoidable blindness, promote disability rights, and ensure no one is left behind.
