Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has alleged that Iran is hatching plans to destabilise the West African sub-region especially Nigeria, the most populous black nation.
Israel and Iran have had strained relations since the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel by Hamas militia believed to have the backing of Iran.
Speaking in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital at an event to commemorate the one year anniversary of the attack, the envoy said one year after Israeli citizens were murdered and taken hostage by Hamas, the militia group is still holding 101 innocent children, women, and the elderly hostage.
According to Freeman, the activities of Iran is not limited to Middle East alone.
He alleged that Iran has a hand in the escalating security concerns in Nigeria where Jihadist groups have displaced millions of persons while banditry festers especially in the northern region.
He expressed confidence in America to give the desired support to Israel in the raging war in the Middle East, where Israel is battling both Hamas of Iran and Hezbollah, a Lebanon-backed militia group.
The envoy said the victory of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States signals hope to bring stability in the Middle East.
Freeman appreciated President Joe Biden for the support Washington has offered Israel during its trying times, hoping that all hostages held by Hamas will be freed.
