Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi put up a fine performance as Everton boosted their hopes of Premier League survival, following a 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Goodison Park on Sunday.
Iwobi was in action for 90 minutes in the thrilling encounter and played as a right wing back –where he has performed excellently this season.
Everton began brightly and caused Chelsea problems right from the start. Anthony Gordon fired a free kick over the crossbar two minutes in, before the home side had a penalty appeal waved away shortly after.
Frank Lampard’s side picked up where they left off in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts minutes after the restart, when Richarlison won the ball back on the edge of the Chelsea box and slotted the ball past Edouard Mendy.
Everton came under late pressure as Chelsea pushed for an equaliser, but the Blues were denied by Pickford, who kept out Mateo Kovacic’s low strike as Lampard’s men held on to move two points behind Leeds and Burnley, with a game in hand.
Meanwhile, defeat still leaves Chelsea, who stay third, with work to do to wrap up a top-four finish.
