Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi has been injured after he was stretched off in tears while featuring for Everton against Manchester United during the third round FA Cup tie on Friday night.
The Everton midfielder was left clutching his ankle as he rolled around in pain following a strong tackle from Tyrell Malacia.
Iwobi had been leading a Toffees counter attack down the right flank before Malacia’s desperate challenge halted the move and left his opponent worse for wear.
Everton captain Seamus Coleman was quick to call medical staff onto the pitch to attend to the Nigeria international as the extent of his injury became clear.
Following a pause in play, Iwobi was carried off the pitch in a stretcher.
In that encounter, Marcus Rashford scored for the fifth straight game as Manchester United beat Everton 3-1, heaping the pressure on beleaguered boss Frank Lampard.
Everton travelled to Old Trafford in trepidation after slipping into the Premier League relegation zone this week following a chastening 4-1 home hammering at the hands of Brighton.
The Red Devils will face another battle in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at home to Charlton on Tuesday January 10, 2023 before they host neighbours Manchester City in a crunch clash in the league on Saturday lunchtime.
A week later, they will face Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday January 22.
For Everton, they will play rock-bottom Southampton at home a week on Saturday before a trip to fellow strugglers West Ham.
