Barley 24 hours to a looming strike by Nigeria’s coalition of Resident Doctors, President Muhammadu Buhari has ignored the need to intervene, and has subsequently jetted out to London, United Kingdom for medical tourism.
The president who left on Tuesday afternoon in one of the jets in the presidential fleet through the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, is expected to see a doctor during his stay in the UK and is due to be back in the country in the second week of April.
Presidential Spokesman, Femi Adesina had announced the president’s intention to resume his routine foreign medical trips in a statement issued yesterday night.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed Nigeria’s underwhelming health sector, the president has ignored the criticisms sparked by his recent trip and has moved to seek medical care abroad.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, are set to embark on an indefinite strike from Wednesday, April 1, over unpaid salaries.
