Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes triumphed in the 2025 edition of the annual 42km Lagos City Marathon on Saturday morning, reaffirming East Africa’s dominance in long-distance running.
Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerged as the winner in the men’s category, clocking a time of 2:14:06 to claim the $50,000 prize money.
Kibet, who finished third last year behind compatriot Bernard Sang who won with a time of 02:16:49 and fellow Kenyan Cheprot, secured his second victory in the competition, having previously won in 2023.
In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa clinched her first marathon title, finishing in 2:37:04.
The 42km race commenced at Western Avenue, in front of the National Stadium, Surulere, and concluded at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
This year’s Lagos City Marathon saw thousands of participants competing for the top prize.
