Enyimba FC were dethroned on Sunday after arch-rivals Rangers international FC amassed 67 points from 37 matches to win 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.
Also known as the People’s Elephants, Enyimba won the NPFL at about this time last season.
Antelopes’ Pedigree
Before now, Rangers known as Flying Antelopes clinched their first league title since 2016.
Their position on the table has now empowered them to represent Nigeria at the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League.
Rangers last played continental football in 2020.
The league triumph has put Rangers on equal level with Enyimba with eight league trophies as the most successful clubs in the country.
Despite Rangers pedigree in Nigerian football, this is just their second title since the Nigerian top league changed status to professionalism in 1990.
They are the only Nigerian club never to be relegated since the Nigerian national league began in 1972.
In the pre-professional football era, they were Nigerian champions in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981 and 1982.
Scramble For Remaining Continental Slots
The second Champions League slot and third placed Confederation Cup spot will be battled on the final Matchday fixtures between Shooting Stars, Remo Stars, and Enyimba.
Eventual winner of the President Federation Cup will grab the second Nigeria’s for CAF Confederation Cup.
