Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Tamyra Stock-Mensah in the final of the women’s wrestling 68kg at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday.
Oborududu fought valiantly, but USA’s Tamyra Mensah came out on top with a 4-1 victory over the Nigerian.
Recall that Oborududu sailed into the final after a dominant win over Mongolia’s Battsetseg Soronzonbold on Monday 2nd, August.
Despite the defeat, the ten-time African champion became the first Nigerian to win an Olympic medal in wrestling.
The caretaker Chairman of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Kigali had said Oborududu was the project of the federation since day one of his tenure.
Oborududu’s feat means Team Nigeria now has two medals at the ongoing quadrennial tournament, following Ese Brume’s bronze medal win in long jump.
