Olympian and Nigerian Wrestling Star, Odunayo Adekuoroye, on Friday defeated her rival Anshu Malik of India to win Gold in the Women’s 57kg Freestyle Wrestling at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The 2018 Commonwealth champion defeated her opponent 6-4 in the final to successfully defend the crown she won in Gold Coast four years ago.
Getting to the final, the reigning African champion defeated Canada’s Hannah Taylor in the semi-final in a swash-buckling 10-0 victory.
The win further increases Nigeria’s gold medals so far to six, with 2022 Olympic silver Wrestling medalist Blessing Oborodudu about now battling her opponent in the final of her weight category.
Before this year’s major contest, Adekuoroye lost to Anastasia Nichita of the Republic of Moldova on account of a fall at the 2020 Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan.
Adekuoroye was leading 8-2 on the scorecard before Nichita achieved the win via Victory by fall (VFA).
