Kenya’s Chief Justice, Martha Koome on Monday unveiled the nation’s inaugural digital sex offender registry, underscoring its potential to effectively combat sexual offences.
Speaking during the launch of the Convicted Sexual Offenders Electronic Register at Nairobi’s Kibera Law Courts, Koome stressed the register’s significance as a comprehensive database housing vital information regarding all convicted sex offenders.
“The register will empower stakeholders within the justice system to monitor and supervise sexual offenders following their release from incarceration,” she stated.
“In addition, it will enable the public to access information on sexual offenders residing in their communities, allowing them to take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves and their children.”
Why this is important
Kenya has actively embraced digital advancements to boost efficiency and streamline services across diverse sectors.
In recent years, the nation has grappled with the pervasive issue of sexual offences, which have presented substantial challenges to the welfare and security of its citizens.
The digital tool not only acts as a deterrent but also assumes a crucial role in the prevention and rehabilitation efforts aimed at sex offenders.
Furthermore, the electronic register facilitates efficient tracking and monitoring of convicted individuals by law enforcement agencies and authorized entities, thereby enhancing public awareness and safety.
