President William Ruto has urged the National Police Service to exercise its powers responsibly and in accordance with the country’s constitution.
Ruto noted this at a press briefing in the Statehouse on Wednesday.
According to President Ruto, there is a need for the police to handle all breaches and violations by officers swiftly and with thorough due process, even as it is essential that the police force maintains and upholds the highest standards of integrity.
“I call on the National Police Service to use its mandate responsibly, professionally, and effectively, in full compliance with the constitution, to promote the national objectives outlined in articles 238, 239, and 244 of our Constitution,” Ruto stated.
The government acknowledged that what began as peaceful demonstrations had been compromised by criminal elements, leading to loss of property and lives.
He noted that security agencies have been instructed to exercise restraint during peaceful protests, but will resort to the use of force when confronted with criminal activities to ensure public safety.
Heritage Times HT notes that amid accusations that police have used live bullets and teargas to disperse protesters, the demonstrations have seen widespread violence, with youths clashing with security forces across the country.
