Kenyan police fired tear gas and arrested several senior opposition politicians as hundreds of people protested against President William Ruto, the high cost of living and claims of cheating in last year’s election.
What was thought to be a peaceful mass demonstration turned violent as police lobbed tear gas canisters at protesters. At least one person was reported dead and scores were injured as opposition supporters engaged the police in running battles in major cities and towns in Kenya.
Thousands of Kenyans came out in large numbers to protest the high cost of living. The opposition, led by Raila Odinga, who lost to President William Ruto in the last election, has been piling pressure on the government to lower the cost of living.
Raila also wants the government o open the server for the general elections, even as he continues to claim that his victory was stolen.
Police clashed with protest as opposition supporters took to the streets over the high cost of living.
The protest reduced Nairobi’s Central Business District to a ghost city, with shops and other businesses remaining closed for the better part of Monday morning.
The protests were also reported in Kisumu, Kitale Mombasa.
Key opposition politicians, including minority leaders in both the Parliament and Senate Opiyo Wundayi and Junet Mohamed, were arrested in the process
