A shocking incident unfolded in a Nairobi courtroom on Thursday when a senior police officer shot and injured a magistrate before being fatally shot himself.
The drama began after Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti issued a ruling in a case reportedly involving the officer’s wife. According to reports, the ruling involved the cancellation of the wife’s bail due to her failure to appear in court previously.
Enraged by the decision, Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, who headed a police station in western Kenya, allegedly drew his weapon and fired at the magistrate, striking her in the hip. Courtroom officers reacted swiftly, with one neutralizing the threat by shooting and killing Kipruto.
The incident left the magistrate and three other officers injured. All are receiving medical treatment.
Kenya’s judiciary confirmed that the magistrate’s ruling involved “cancelling the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond.” They further stated that the shooter was initially identified as “a police officer who is married to the suspect.”
The national police service acknowledged the officer’s presence in the courtroom but offered no explanation for his actions. A full investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
This courtroom violence has left Kenyans reeling. While accusations of extra-judicial killings have plagued the police for some time, such an incident within a court building is unprecedented.
The judiciary has pledged to strengthen security measures and vowed to ensure the safety of its staff and court users. “We wish our colleague a quick recovery,” stated Chief Registrar Winfridah Mokaya. She also offered condolences to the family of the deceased officer.
