Kenyan President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga are under mounting pressure as leading newspapers in the country call on them to reflect on the potential consequences of their actions amidst ongoing protests against recent tax increases.
The situation has turned increasingly dire, with Wednesday witnessing violent clashes between protestors and Kenyan police, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives.
In a joint editorial released today, the newspapers expressed grave concern, emphasizing that Kenya is teetering on the edge of a dangerous precipice.
They called upon both President Ruto and Raila Odinga to exercise restraint and wisdom to prevent further bloodshed.
The editorial warned that failure to find common ground could lead the nation into an abyss from which recovery might prove nearly impossible.
The newspapers highlighted the enormous responsibility borne by the two leaders, urging them to extinguish the fire of unrest before it engulfs the entire nation.
They fear that Kenya could follow the tragic path of neighbouring countries, experiencing the horrors of civil wars and even escalating into full-scale genocide.
The press also directed their attention to the protesters, pleading for them to exercise restraint and uphold peaceful demonstrations.
Furthermore, they appealed to the police forces, urging them not to employ excessive force against the protesters.
Amidst the ongoing unrest, a section of Kenyan citizens has taken to social media, urging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take note of alleged human rights violations perpetrated by security forces during the protests
Furthermore, the Media Council of Kenya has strongly condemned the alarming cases of police officers disguising themselves as journalists to arrest protestors.
