Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has said he cannot guarantee Oliver Giroud will enjoy regular playing at the club even after the January transfer window closes.
Giroud came off the bench yesterday, to put Chelsea back in front after Serhou Guirassy’s 85th minutes header canceled Callum Hudson Odoi’s opener for the Blues.
The French man on the night, scored only his second goal of the season across all competitions, having started once in 178 minutes of play.
His national team coach, Didier Deschamps has told him to leave Chelsea in January if he must be part of the French squad to Euro 2021.
However, Lampard has praised the striker for portraying the right attitude despite falling from the pecking order, insisting that he’s happy with the 34-year-old who has proven that age is not a factor.
“It’s a selection issue for me and I need that. The fact we are playing every three days, maybe two days over Christmas unless the scheduling gets sorted. With Oli it’s hard to say that I have to prove to him, because all I have to do is myself just look game by game and plan for the best for us.
“At the moment Tammy is in great form as well and I have to pick on face value what is best for us.
“I think Oli knows, even when he hasn’t played all the time, I hope he knows how much I am happy with his and rely on him in moments. Every player wants to play every game, that’s an impossible part of my job to keep them all happy. Hopefully he knows and is content.
He got minutes, he came on today and there will be games he starts for us as well. That is hopefully we keep moving forward in that way,” Lampard added.
Chelsea booked their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League yesterday after staging an emphatic 2 -1 away victory against Rennes with two games to spare.
