President George Weah has suspended his Chief of Staff, Nathaniel McGill named in a fresh sanction by the US over allegations bordering on his involvement in official corruption.
The President also suspended Liberia’s Chief Prosecutor Sayma Syrenius Cephus and Bill Twehway, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the Liberian Presidency, said President Weah views the allegations against the officials contained in the report as grave.
The release also directed the most senior officials to assume duty of the suspended appointees in acting capacity.
The United States on Monday announced that it has imposed corruption sanctions on senior Liberian officials, including one close to President George Weah- the Minister in charge of Presidential Affairs and President Weah’s Secretary General.
McGill is accused of “abusing his position to undermine the integrity and independence of Liberia’s democratic institutions … for personal gain,” according to a statement from the US Department of Treasury spokesman, Ned Price.
A separate Treasury Department statement said he “received bribes” in government contracts.
The sanctions entail that all property and interests in property of the three officials domiciled in the United States must be blocked and reported to Treasury.
