The governments of Abia, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Plateau and Lagos have declared curfews in the wake of increasing attacks on human lives, arson and malicious damage to public and private facilities.
Abia State:
A dusk to dawn curfew was imposed in Abia state by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu following Monday’s night attack on police officers on official duty around Azikiwe Road by Asa in Aba. The attacks were said to be carried out by yet to be identified hoodlums who killed police officers and made away with their arms and ammunition. Governor Ikpeazu went on to approve a cash reward of N5 million for information that can lead to the capture of the hoodlums and armed cultists.
Ekiti State:
In Ekiti state, a 24-hour curfew was imposed due to fears that a breakdown of law and order would occur if incidents of gang-rape, robberies, physical assaults on innocent people as well as looting and burning of a police station were left unchecked. The Heritage Times gathered that security operatives including policemen and soldiers have been strategically stationed in major roads at Ado-Ekiti to enforce compliance to the curfew.
Ondo State:
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has also declared a 24-hour-curfew effective from 12Am on Wednesday. The curfew was in reaction to violence being recorded in the state following the hijacking of peaceful #EndSARS protests by suspected hoodlums.
Osun State:
In a similar development, Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun state declared a 24-hour-curfew effective from 11:59 pm on Wednesday Night. According to a statement issued by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Wole Oyebamiji, the need to declare a curfew became necessary as “events of the last 48 hours have shown clearly that the protests have been hijacked”.
Plateau State:
Governor Simon Bako Lalong followed suit by imposing a 24-hours curfew in Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas of Plateau State. His decision came immediately after the destruction of properties, cars and looting of business premises along the Ahmadu Bello way as well as the burning of a place of worship along Gyero Road in Bukuru. Added to the list of destroyed structures were Mr Biggs and Jaiz Bank
Lagos State:
Lagos is unarguably the first state to impose a 24-hour-curfew in all parts of the state owing to the hijacking of peaceful #EndSARS protests by hoodlums and disgruntled elements. The curfew which was initially scheduled to begin by 4 pm on Tuesday was later re-adjusted to 9 pm that same day.
