At least 64 suspects were arrested on Saturday for various offences during the coronation of Charles III, the London’s Metropolitan police confirmed on Monday.
The police had earlier announced the detention of over 50 persons during the event that attracted world leaders and celebrities from across the globe, with tens of thousands of spectators who had lined up the London street to catch a glimpse.
“As part of the policing operation in central London for the Coronation, a total of 64 arrests were made yesterday (Saturday, May 6) for various offences including breach of the peace and conspiracy to cause a public nuisance”, the police said in a statement.
While four suspects have already been charged with offences and dates for court hearings already fixed, several others have been bailed or released with no further action.
About 2,000 anti-monarchy protesters had gathered on Saturday in Central London on Trafalgar Square to protest the coronation of king Charles III with several inscriptions, such as “not my king” and others.
King Charles III was officially crowned at a solemn coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey, an event that came about seven decades after the coronation of his predecessor and mother, late Queen Elizabeth.
The UK has been engrossed in protests triggered by increasing living cost.
