Central Tunisia experienced a magnitude 4.9 earthquake on Monday, according to local authorities. The tremor struck at approximately 09:45 GMT in the eastern region of Meknassy, located in Sidi Bouzid province, as reported by Tunisia’s National Institute of Meteorology.
Despite the significant magnitude, no injuries or structural damage have been reported so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential aftershocks.
Tunisia, situated in a relatively stable seismic zone, rarely experiences strong earthquakes. However, Monday’s tremor is a reminder that seismic activity, though infrequent, does occur in the region.
The last notable earthquake in the country was recorded in April 2023, when a 4.9-magnitude quake struck south-western Tozeur province. Similar to the latest event, it did not result in any casualties or significant damage.
Meanwhile, local emergency services remain on alert, and residents in affected areas have been advised to remain cautious. Authorities have also encouraged the public to report any signs of damage or unusual seismic activity to ensure a swift response.
