Rejuvenated Manchester United performed at the big English Premier League stage to earn a thrilling victory against rivals Arsenal on Sunday September 4, 2022.
In the encounter, new signing Antony scored on his debut and ended Arsenal’s winning run this season with an intense game at Old Trafford.
The Gunners had won all five of their games so far and United have now won their last four on the spin.
Arsenal were on top for long periods, pegging United back in their own half with Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli a persistent threat.
But United’s £82m signing from Brazil was clinical when his opportunity came, curling his shot around goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale against the run of play.
Arsenal got back on level terms when Jesus lost control of the ball in the box and it fell to Bukayo Saka, who comfortably turned it home before Bruno Fernandes picked out Marcus Rashford with a sublime pass six minutes later and the 24-year-old calmly finished his shot.
Mikel Arteta’s side seemed to still be in control until Rashford got his second of the game – a clinical finish from a speedy counter-attack.
Earlier on Sunday, Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho scored his first season goal for Leicester City, yet his club ended up losing to Brighton.
Iheanacho put his side in front and Patson Daka drew them level at 2-2 before halftime, but an own goal from defender Luke Thomas and strikes from Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard and Mac Allister, one from the penalty-spot and the other a superb free kick, sealed victory for the home side.
Leicester defended poorly and gave up possession too easily in another demoralising defeat that left them with a single point from their opening six games having lost their last five matches in a row, their worst start to a season since 1983-84.
Next up is a home match against Aston Villa.
