The Vice President of the Mauritania Football Association, (FA) Pape Amghar Dieng, has been confirmed dead.
Report said the country’s FA top official, died on Tuesday January 25, 2023 in Algeria while celebrating Mauritania’s historic victory against Mali, in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
Following his demise, Africa’s football governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF) has commiserated with Mauritania and the entire football fraternity in the country.
CAF in a short statement, hailed Dieng for his contribution as part of a leadership collective that has stirred Mauritania football on a path to success.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Federation Mauritanian Football family under the leadership of Ahmed Yahya, the family of Mr Dieng and Mauritanians during this difficult and sad moment,” the CAF statement said.
Mauritania’s defeat of Mali means, they made it to the quarter-final of the tournament.
They will face Senegal on Friday January 27, 2023.
Other last eight games will see host Algeria confront Ivory Coast same day.
On Saturday, it will be Madagascar versus Mozambique, while Niger battle Ghana.
