The Arsenal mascot, Gunnersaurus has made his first public appearance at the Emirate Stadium following his reinstatement at the club.
Jerry Quy, who has been the face behind the mascot for the past 27 years, was relieved of what he loved doing in the wake of a job-cutting scheme implemented by Arsenal in the summer to aid the financial impact of COVID-19.
The club’s faithful expressed displeasure over the decision to sack Gunnersaurus and consequently showed support, with hashtag #JusticeForGunnersaurus.
Arsenal’s out of favor midfielder, Mesut Ozil was displeased with Quy’s dismissal and thus, offered to pay the mascot’s salary for the entire time he will remain at the club.
Gunnersaurus posted a tweet on Tuesday from the sidelines of the Premier League club’s home ground with the caption: “Back at Emirates Stadium today.”
There has been a roster of people now filling the role of Gunnersaurus and the club had offered Quy to be a part of this, The Heritage Times learned.
While the identity of the person portraying Gunnersaurus is still unknown, the German, who was excited about the news, responded to the mascot’s tweet: “Happy to see you back where you belong #YaGunnersYa.”
