Super Eagles’ star Moses Simon was not selected to make the final list of nominees for the men’s CAF player of the year awards for 2022.
Simon who plays for FC Nantes and Akinkunmi Amoo of FC Copenhagen were the only Nigerians to make the first of the men’s categories, with the latter also not part of the final nomination for the young player of the year.
The list was released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on June 30.
But when the final list came out on Monday, the two players were not part of the elite African performers in the last few months who made the top list.
Earlier, Simon was listed for the Player of the Year award, while Amoo was listed for the Young Player of the Year award.
However, the final list has reigning CAF African Player of the Year Sadio Mane (Senegal and Bayern Munich) and former winner of the award, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez is one of the leading contenders as well as Cameroon’s pair of Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar.
CAF revealed that the Awards Gala would take place in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday July 21, 2022 where Sadio Mane would either retain his 2019 crown or a new African Player of the Year would be anointed.
