FIFA has confirmed that female referees will officiate matches at this year’s men’s World Cup for the first time in the tournament’s history.
African referee, Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda, France’s Stephanie Frappart and Japan’s Yoshimi Yamashita are the three female referees selected to officiate matches in Qatar.
They will be joined by assistant referees Neuza Back, Kathryn Nesbitt and Karen Diaz Medina.
Earlier this year, Salima became the first woman to officiate at the AFCON in Cameroon.
She was the centre referee for the Group B game between Guinea and Zimbabwe.
Premier League referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have also been chosen for the tournament, which begins on Monday, 21 November.
In total, 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video match officials have been chosen for this FIFA World Cup.
