Super Eagles Captain Ahmed Musa is considering retirement from international football after the 2022 World Cup slated for Qatar in November.
Musa, who is currently leading the charge in the Nigerian camp at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cameroon, is the country’s most-capped player with 103 appearances.
The former Leicester City forward discussing about his future with the Super Eagles, erased the possibility of featuring for the team in the subsequent editions of the biennial showpiece.
Nigeria got off to a good start at the competition following Kelechi Iheanacho’s wonder goal in the 30th minute to beat Egypt 1-0 in Group D opener.
Prior to the encounter, Musa at a pre-match conference said: “I think this is my last AFCON in Shaa Allah.
“I have spoken to the boys that this is the only gift you can give to me. Because this is my last AFCON. And the boys told me that they are ready.
“My first AFCON was in South Africa in 2013 and we ended winning it. And my second appearance was in Egypt and we won the bronze.”
Musa made his debut for the Nigeria senior team in a qualification match for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations against Madagascar, where he came on as a substitute for Mikel John Obi in a 2–0 win.
He scored his first goal for the Super Eagles in a March 2011 friendly against Kenya, and holds the record as the only Nigerian player to score in two separate FIFA World Cups with four goals.
The former Kano Pillars’ man could make his first appearance at the ongoing AFCON against Sudan on Saturday, after missing the group opener against Egypt.
