Frank Lampard has revealed that he broke his hand celebrating Everton’s match winning goal against Newcastle on Thursday.
The Merseysiders have been on a terrible run of form recently, as anything less than three points was not enough for Lampard’s relegation-threatened side.
However, Alex Iwobi scored in the ninth minute of injury time to secure a priceless 1-0 victory for the Toffees in the Premier League.
Iwobi’s goal sparked incredible celebrations around Goodison Park, and the former Chelsea boss revealed to Amazon that he broke his hand celebrating the winner.
“I’ve broken my hand in the celebrations,” Lampard said. “My bones must be going soft, I don’t remember the moment.
“It was an amazing night and we need those nights. Spirit and togetherness, the players stood up tonight. It was not a night for quality or calm. It means so much to the stadium we all felt that. I wanted to use the atmosphere.
“Everton fans wanted to see passion. We proved what we could be tonight. I don’ t think it is a red card. It is a yellow, yes, is it a strong yellow? Possibly. But that isn’t a clear error. It was the wrong decision and we lose Allan for three games.”
The Nigeria international’s winning goal for Everton was the second-latest winning goal on record (since 2006/07)
Timed at 98 minutes and 19 seconds, only Bruno Fernandes’ goal in a 3-2 win at Brighton in 2020 was netted later (99:45)
Iwobi’s 99th minute winner was only his second goal in his last 32 Premier League appearances for Everton, also netting against Wolves in November earlier this season.
