A Nairobi magistrate has cautioned the public against attacking officers on duty and called on the police to carry out their duties honorably.
Milimani principal magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi made this statement on Friday evening after releasing Ian Njoroge, who is accused of assaulting a police officer and violently robbing him along Kamiti Road.
The magistrate expressed concern over the public taking the law into their own hands by assaulting police officers while they are performing their duties.
“It is indisputable that assaulting a law enforcement officer in uniform is a serious offence, regardless of the reasons. If not curtailed, it can lead to anarchy and lawlessness,” he said.
“I fervently urge fellow Kenyan patriots to never engage in or tolerate such actions. To the disciplined forces: shine your badges, polish your boots, be honorable in your duties, remain steadfast, and always do good.”
Njoroge was not given the option of cash bail. Instead, he must deposit a motor vehicle logbook or a title deed worth Sh700,000.
“In conclusion, I admit the accused to a bond of Sh700,000 with a surety of the same amount. There will be no alternative of a cash bail at this stage. However, parties are free to seek a review later,” Ekhubi stated.
